Studio Policies

  • Conduct

Students and family members are expected to treat each other, their teacher, and the studio space with respect. There is a zero tolerance policy for violent or threatening language in person or in written correspondence.

Studio equipment including instruments, music, decorations, teaching supplies, etc. is often fragile and difficult to replace. Students and/or parents will be held responsible for the full cost of replacing or repairing equipment that they damage.

  • Practice Agreement

Students should not expect to progress without regular at-home practice. Before lessons begin, each student and their guardian will sign a Practice Agreement indicating that they understand that practice is a requirement for all students.

Time will be spent in each lesson discussing how and what to practice, and this information will be recorded in the student’s notebook.

Younger or beginning students may require parent assistance in monitoring and structuring practice time. Parents are always welcome to ask questions about how to best support their child in the practice room

Students who regularly fail to practice outside of class may be placed on probation or asked to leave the studio.

  • Practice Guidelines

Each student should aim to practice 5-6 days a week. How long to practice depends on the age and level of the student. The following is a general guideline.

Ages 4-8: 10-20 minutes per lesson per day

Ages 8-11: 20-30 minutes per lesson per day

Ages 11-13: 30 minutes per lesson per day

Ages 13+: 30-40 minutes per lesson per day

Please note: it is always best to prioritize practicing more days as opposed to practicing more time each session. 5, 20-minute practice sessions is better than 1, 60-minute practice session.

  • Hygiene

Piano and organ students must maintain clean, manicured hands. Nails should be trimmed so that they do not extend past the fingertip. Nail polish and fake nails are allowed so long as they do not exceed this length. Soap and water as well as hand sanitizer will be available for students to use before each lesson.

All students and parents are also asked to avoid strong perfume, cologne, or scented bath products as Ms. Ashley is extremely allergic.

  • Food and Bevereges

Students and family members may have food and drink in the waiting area, but are responsible for disposing of their own trash.

No food is allowed in the studio itself. Water is allowed but must remain on the floor at all times. Under no circumstances should food or drinks be placed on the piano.

  • Waiting Room Policy

Family members are welcome to wait in the waiting room during their student’s lesson. Anyone in the waiting room is expected to remain quiet so that students can focus on their lesson.

A parent or guardian may choose to sit in the studio space with their child during their lesson. This is limited to 1 adult only. Additional adults or family members must wait in the waiting area. All children other than the student must remain in the waiting area for the duration of the lesson.

No children are to be left unattended in the waiting room for any reason.
